inspiration of the bible

Meaning of inspiration

The Bible is Inspired by God[i]

  • 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV): "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."
  • 2 Peter 1:20–21 (NIV): "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

Understanding the Inspiration of Scripture

  • Inspiration means the entire Bible was breathed out by God.
  • The words of the Bible are both divine and human; God inspired them while using each author’s unique personality and background.
  • The original manuscripts (autographs) were directly inspired.
  • Human writers were divinely guided, so their words are the words of God.
  • Inspiration is not a creative spark or literary genius; it is the infallible guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • It is not true that the Bible becomes the Word of God only when it is read or believed.
  • It is not true that only parts or concepts of the Bible are inspired.
  • The entire Bible is inspired; this includes spiritual and non-spiritual subjects alike.

Reasons Why the Bible Is the Word of God

  • The Bible Claims to Be God's Word
  • The Bible clearly declares itself to be the Word of God, not just by circular reasoning but by abundant testimony.

Old Testament Evidence:

  • "Thus says the Lord” appears over 420 times.
  • "The word of the Lord" appears 138 times.
  • 280 Old Testament quotations are cited in the New Testament using the phrase: “as it is written”, showing it was regarded as authoritative.

Examples from the Old Testament

  • 2 Samuel 23:2 (NIV): "The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue."
  • Jeremiah 1:9 (NIV): "Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, 'I have put my words in your mouth."
  • Exodus 34:27 (NIV): "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.'"
  • Exodus 20:1–3 (NIV): "And God spoke all these words: 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me."
  • Exodus 24:3–4 (NIV): "When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, 'Everything the Lord has said we will do.' Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said."
  • Jeremiah 36:2 (NIV): "Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you during the reign of Josiah till now."
  • Ezekiel 1:1–3 (NIV): "The heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God... the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel, and the hand of the Lord was on him there."

Examples from the New Testament

  • Matthew 1:22 (NIV): "All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet."
  • Matthew 2:15 (NIV): "And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'Out of Egypt I called my son.'"
  • 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NIV): "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
  • Matthew 4:4 (NIV): "Jesus answered, 'It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
  • John 17:17 (NIV): "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."
  • Acts 1:16 (NIV): "The Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas."
  • 1 Corinthians 2:12–13 (NIV): "What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words."
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NIV): "When you received the word of God, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe."
  • 2 Peter 3:15–16 (NIV): "Just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand... as do the other Scriptures."
  • Matthew 10:20 (NIV): "For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you."
  • Luke 12:12 (NIV): "For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
  • John 14:26 (NIV): "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
  • John 16:13 (NIV): "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears..."
  • 1 John 4:1 (NIV): "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God."
